Petrol blended with up to 10% ethanol is becoming more widely available at petrol stations around New Zealand as oil companies introduce more biofuels to meet the sales targets mandated by Government.

Most NZ-new petrol-engined Mitsubishi vehicles built since 2000 will run satisfactorily on this blend: only those that use the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) engine will not, since GDi is unsuitable for any ethanol blend.

Pre-2000 NZ-new vehicles may experience driveability issues and may need to be retuned. In some cases it may not be possible to achieve acceptable performance in all situations.

Used import models built to Japan's domestic specifications may only be operated with a maximum of 3% ethanol blend fuels.

Ethanol's arrival brings with it some fresh considerations for drivers, starting with the first fill of the new fuel. The fuel tank contains (condensed) water as well as petrol, and while petrol doesn't mix with water, ethanol does. So the first time ethanol is used it's important to run low on petrol and then fill the tank to the brim, to minimise the amount of water that mixes with the ethanol.

Drivers need to bear in mind that fuel system components wear with age, so pumps, sender units, filters and other items may need to be replaced after switching to the new fuel.

Mitsubishi does not guarantee the suitability of vehicles to operate on ethanol blend fuels or take responsibility for the effects they may have on driveability or on hardware items.

Comments on the suitability of Mitsubishi vehicles to accommodate the ethanol blend are on the basis that they are fitted with approved Mitsubishi replacement parts, and do not necessarily apply to vehicles fitted with other than approved Mitsubishi replacement parts.
